Starting in Goal as an Adult - 2020 Canadian Edition
Giltis replied to Giltis's topic in General Goalie Discussion
My first game on Monday may be pushed back due to the Coronavirus. But otherwise, I had another test skate on 3/4" and it felt much better, although I'm now wondering how all that gear weight might affect me. I also did test fitted wearing everything again a few times, and found a good sequence, where I put on my skates before my pants (I had trouble putting on skates with those enormous pants on), but also I fixed how big the pants felt on me by sort of tucking in my C/A and looping through the loop, my pants are now up higher and there's no interference with the leg pads. I guess I'm a tucker. P.S. It's normal to sweat from just putting on the gear right? I think I will bring three water bottles, one with ice water, one with gatorade, and one water for after on the ride home. -
I've always advocated for SIDAS footbeds, there's no guesswork involved.
-
As in titanium? Assuming it is, how would that affect sharpening it? Could it cause more wear on the stones? I guess it'd be just a coating like the Step/Tydan stuff. I'm not much of a Bauer skates fan, but that tendon guard looks really cool.

Update I have all the gear now, I've got a deal on a CCM Composite. I went with a 25" based on how it felt when I was in a butterfly (I wish they had a 25.5", or maybe I will go 26" in a different brand the next time). I went with a Bauer Supreme line of skates, and even though it was the best fitting skate they still killed my feet a test skate. I've placed in a SIDAS footbed and it seems to have alleviated the pain while standing up (we will see if the pain returns during a skate). Another test skating tonight during warmups with the new hollow to see (my sharpener was a bit worried that I am going too shallow with a 3/4", but it's what I skate on normally so I think I will be ok). I have my first pickup game next week, my buddy who's a goalie is coming out to play on the opposite side to see. I'm both excited and nervous, first time a long while. -
This is what happened to my friend with his mid-level Bauers, his steel kept on snapping near the same spot. We thought it was the steel quality (esp. due to the Bauer steel reputation at the time), but turns out his holders were damaged/misaligned somehow and causing a stress point, and so any little impact would cause it to fail.

As a trainer, even if you can't skate well at your kid's age, we still need guys to pass the puck during drills, be a presence to keep the kids present and engaged. Kids do well when their parents are involved in any capacity, even if it's being the jersey guy, or the guy that helps the goalies get dressed, whatever it may be. Take the course on being a trainer/first aid in case of an accident, be the guy that carries the water bottles for the kids to the benches. You're on the right mindset in wanting to help, this is a great start.

My dad had stents put in a few years back, I was more worried than he was about the procedure hah. He's totally back to his old self now, golfing all the time.

Looks aside, if TF7/TF9s are at a cheaper price point and fits less radical feet, then sign me up for another pair.

I settled on a skate, and I wore them during my beer league warmups yesterday to see how it'd be (with player gear on). I almost fell twice lol. What was crazy is that after 5 mins, when I went back to player's skates, that took a moment to adjust as well. I got them sharpened at a 5/8" but it felt like it was dug in real good. Hopefully I will get used to that feeling. Skating straight forward was easy, as well as skating backwards, but I did not have a good time shuffling, or changing directions, should I go with a shallower hollow to something like 3/4" (what I usually get for my player's skates)? -
SB4.0 love that holder. I'd have gone XS if they had it available during my switch though.

Are the codes from their site, I'm not in the market for new blades, but if I was I would contact them through FB (https://www.facebook.com/massiveblade) and tell them explicitly what I want, and order directly. Apparently a company based in Korea, using vacuum forging. They seem to have some deals/contracts with teams in the CHL and Korea, so I wouldn't say that they are disappearing just yet. But if I was in NA, I'd look elsewhere as I don't think it's worth the effort when there are similar options.

Ah that's too bad, I would have sent you an older pair if your sizing was close and lived in Canada, unfortunately shipping is quite a bit going across the boarder.

You were right, I tried a test fit last night with everything, and there is full coverage with overlap. I'm having a hard time with the goalie pants feeling a bit big though. I'll see if I need to swap them for a medium or something (this is something I experience in player gear too, I'm right in between a Medium and a Large). Just need those Skates and Stick and then I'll be ready. -
Yeah honestly, I didn't feel it when I was skating. It probably would have been fine, but I'm extremely particular about the feel of my skates.
-
I really think he likes the flex, every time I see his skates up close with his ankle flexed, it's creased to all hell.
-
I've got a couple of FT2s coming my way, really looking forward to it. I've been hearing nothing but good things from reviews and word of mouth.
-
I've experienced this with the older holders, drove me nuts and I had to swap them out. TRUE did send me new ones though, but I didn't want to chance it. My unverified theory is that the holders can't take the long bake temps, and they weaken or loosen up.
-
I've had mine for a year and a half, I just see some normal wear in the linings. I skate quite a bit all throughout the year.
-
What size do you wear and where are you located?

So found the right fitting skates, didn’t buy them yet. Turns out that I fit into a Bauer Supremes. I’m now contemplating between the S170 vs S190 models that they had, I’m now looking online at the differences and also possibly see if the newer S27/S29s have anything much improved on them. -

My McKenney pants came in this afternoon, I've not tried them on yet, but looks decent enough and were a great price for new pants. I also ordered the Passau bag so I'm looking forward to that. For sticks I was looking at these https://www.northstarsticks.com/shop/g1-shooter-ggsu-edition-goalie-stick/ in 26" to start out from, I emailed and they've told me that they are foam core. I'm 6' but yeah would like a shorter paddle for my butterfly, as a player I use a stick that's on the shorter side so cutting the shaft is something to keep in mind. I am also looking at skates today after work, so if I see a cheap composite I'll pick one of those up. Finally I think that completes the gear if I'm successful at skate/stick shopping. Then I guess my first game could be as soon as March. -

I wasn't able to get skates, I've tried a few, but they lacked my size or width. It's really odd because I measure as a 8/8.5 on their Brannock device, but I couldn't get into anything smaller than a 9. Bauer Vapor 9.5D felt good at the back, but way too roomy at the front, I'll have to look for a 9D and try it. The CCM tacks felt ok, but again they only had a 9.5 and it would need punching out. -

Yeah I had to do the Oxyclean bath for the chest protector, I had ran it through a long cycle in the wash, and it still smelled, so I dunked it for about an hour in oxyclean, and that was what fixed it. Incredible how much brown water it produced even after a cycled wash. The bath actually took off the Passau logo that's in the back lol. A few updates W.R.T. the gloves, I probably won't be using the ones pictured because I got better sets that came with the pads (and matches too). They close a lot better/easier, in better condition, with only a tiny hole. I got myself a PAW kneeguard and pro-laces, tried going down a few times into a butterfly, and it felt MUCH better. I feel much more confident. I'm going shopping for pants/jock/skates today most likely, so I'll have a look when I get home how it all fits with the chest. I'll probably try my first game within a month's time., I got the ok from two guys that runs pickup leagues (so I can slot in the one that I usually play at, or one that's a level lower) I'm still not certain of the paddle sizing, so I might borrow a few different ones from the goalies that play in my pickup. After reading a lengthy post on here, I was looking at a 25" one. I heard they differ a bit by brand though. Also I was afraid the arm length on the chest was too short, but I put on my glove and blocker, and it covers everything perfectly and gets out of the way. -
My "award" for best money spent on new gear....

I would at this point to eliminate all factors, switch to a CCM holder 4.0 or XS. Then if there were any misalignment, that should resolve it. Not to mention the fact that Stepsteel will now be available to you in the future. -
Thoughts on these skates "flexing"?
Giltis replied to JimmyTheDriver's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
TRUE Skates. One thing to note is that when I got my first skates (CCM Tacks) punched a 2nd time, I was warned that it was so close to the bottom, it's a hard area to punch/modify and that it might ruin the skates (as it might pull on the footbed), I've tried everything to like the skates, all the different footbeds available. I've evaluated the cost of all the full customs TRUE skates were the cheapest route. When I first got my TRUE, I was pleasantly stunned that the insides of the skates looked extremely similar to how I get my skates punched out (I mean I shouldn't have been because they use my foot as the model after all, but still). CCM TRUE Skates 500 ~1000 Punching (twice) 60 Footbeds (3) ~150 ~700 ~1000
