Hockey's Simple Pleasures

Recommended Posts

wearing a Minnesota North Stars, Quebec Nrodiques, or my personal favorite atlanta flames hat and meeting someone who remembers those teams.

100% agreed, I feel the same way every time someone notices my Oakland Seals hat. I always get those looks of revelation on someones face when they realize what team the hat is for.

I have one to add and it's early morning games. Get to the rink at 7:00, you and the rinkys are the only guys there, the ice is fresh as it's ever gonna get... reminds me of my days back in Novice. Gives me a reason to wake up, too bad we usually only have them in tournys :(.

yea If i could find a whalers hat I would be all over it, i think winnipeg jets are my next addition

the sound of the inside crossbar, there's no other sound like it

having no points in a game but knowing you came up big in tight situations

laying down a huge hit and your opponents team react " daammmmm"

simple toe drag dangle, so fun

looking at my jersey hanging in the locker room before game time

awesome thanks but I dont do trucker hats

In the 59fifty thread there was a link to some old school hats.

http://www.neweracap.com/nshop/product.php...opDown=hatGroup

I don't see the Whalers. Jets are there on the second page.

This thread is dangerously close to breaking my streak of going 3 weeks without buying another baseball hat....

I have a Whalers shirt and a Denver Spurs shirt & a Jets hat. The Whalers shirt gets some looks and comments. It was really cool when I guy commented about the Spurs shirt. It was a pretty cool conversation.

I would say the team aspect, no other team is like a hockey team.

But the best thing I've experienced is my best friend since high school always wanted to play and our company has a team and he decided to join, we went to open hockey and stick and puck for months, teaching him to play. Right before the first game he played in he comes up to me with the biggest smile on his face and said thanks. Still waiting for his first goal

Have to agree. being part of a hockey team is just something special. That is a great story and very cool of your friend to say "thanks".

For me:

- the crunching sound of skates on ice...it is such a distinct sound.

- having the ice all to yourself

- watching someone score their first goal

Oh and of course the smell of the ice.

Passing the puck to yourself through your legs, and firing a backhand right under the crossbar while the local varsity hockey team chants "Ovey....Ovey" at ya...

Freaking priceless....and happened today B)

- Ringing one off the post - then making good on a goal later in the game...

- Scoring a pretty goal and having a buddy say "I didn't even know you could do that"

- Team gathering after a goal

- Walking into the dressing room and seeing all your buddies

-sunday morning drop in with your buddies. while hearing old "war stories" from the vets that are there.

-having a language that no one in school understands

-forgetting life when you touch blades to ice (no matter where, rink, pond, back yeard.)

-skating from noon until 3 am on the lake with nothin more than a pair of boots as a make shift goal. and a couple of buddies

some have already been mentioned but, I'll just add to the love of hockey...

-the drive to the barn listening to my buddies girlfriend bitching at him because she had to go and watch

-when the instant you put on a piece of gear you know it's gonna be a good game

-saying and listening to all the dirty jokes in the locker room

-the frist one to step onto the ice and not fall (been there and done that)

-taking a shot that somehow by the sake of the hockey gods went in

-making a move on the ice and not knowing how you pulled it off

-The post game handshake line. Win or lose, there is nothing like showing some respect that just isn't done in other sports anymore.

-callouses on the outside of your pinkies from tying your laces.

Any idea why the NHL doesn't do that? I remember last playoffs 2 teams did that at the end of a series and the commentators thought it was a magical moment or something, seems to be pretty standard across the board in other leagues I see Junior/Pro.

Doing it 82 times a season, it'd lose its importance. End of each playoff series, it's still got it's allure.

I know what you mean on that last one. Im no dangleshow by any means but every once in a while I'll be bringing the puck in the zone, and just by keeping moving, and looking for open ice, I'll stickhandle around a guy or two, occasionally even put it between their legs, and once I get back to the bench I realize what I managed to do, and try not to smile too much.
