In 2014, STX released a line of high-end sticks and gloves, and now have continued to round out their lines by adding a protective category to it.

Protective -

Just like with sticks and gloves, the Surgeon and Stallion lines are distinct with each other and play into the stories STX has been telling with each line.

The Surgeon series is their "Precision Fit", which is an anatomical, sleeker fit. On the Surgeon 500 shoulder pad, it's all foam. Every bit of it is foam. But, some pretty cool features - the bicep pads don't have straps; it has a sleeve in which you slip your arm into. And on the bottom of the shoulder pad chest area, they have tabs that stick on top of the strap, providing a tighter fit and zero interference with the jersey sticking to the end of the strap.

The Stallion is their "Power Fit" which means it is a more rugged pad. The padding is fuller, including more padding in the collarbone and ribs, and the sternum and spine plate is much bigger than what is on the Surgeon. The bicep pad is a two-piece pad as well, that can be adjusted for length.

On the elbow pad front, the Surgeon is a 3 piece elbow pad and the Stallion is a 2-piece. Both feature the 360+ Strap, which is the bottom strap of the low pad - it goes completely around the forearm. The Surgeon has a full-length spandex sleeve, whereas the Stallion has a half-length sleeve. The Stallion does have additional protection in the forearm area, because, you know, rugged.

The shins are also completely different. The Surgeon is going to be a bit tapered by design, and comprised entirely of foam. The 360+ strap wraps completely around the pad right below the knee, and has a neoprene strap that splits for two attachment points over the calf wing. The Stallion is wider and more of a traditional fit. Still has the 360+ Strap, however, has something very interesting - a cut-resistant sleeve. In this age of players getting cut behind the shin pad, that's a pretty cool feature.

On the 300 series protective, you're still maintaining the same fit stories, however, the foams are down spec'd to less high-density foam (more EVA foam) but the 360+ Strap is still present.

They were very impressive at WF too, unfortunately I didn't spend enough time focusing on their protective as I had just bought all new within a year, but I will definitely look closer once the lines are released into stores!

I was definitely impressed by both the Surgeon 500 elbow pads and gloves at Winterfest. The shins were nice, but I'm not sure I love the 360 strap...I think I prefer the type of top strap Bauer Supreme and Warrior Dynasty and Projekt pads use - I'd certainly give them another look if I were in the market though. I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the shoulder pads as I primarily play roller now and have been fine with my Farrells for the times I play ice, however; after seeing them in the catalogue I'll likely give them another look if I see them in a store in a few months.

This was done by Rawlings back in 1996ish.

DarkStar50, where the hell are you? You of all people have to still have that catalog!

Looks to be a much more understated and better execution than the Rawlings "Jam". Those were brutal.

do you mean to say one is stallion and the other is surgeon? JR little typo there. Great job as always on the breakdown

The shoulders look very interesting. I was about to buy some RBZ's but I am going to hold out a bit longer now and see how these go in reviews. I wonder how low profile they will actually be? The elbows are also interesting, I use to have some old Mission Warp Zero elbows that had the sleeve (2000/2001), they were great!

Something I noticed.. In one of the pics at the beginning of the catalog it shows a pretty decent gap between the shoulder cap and bicep guard on the surgeon 500. Hopefully the player wearing it was a giant and adjusted it down to max length.. Not sure how I would feel about a gap like that in padding..

I tried on the Surgeon shoulders at WF and they were possibly the lowest profile pads I have ever put on. They felt like they had a little bit more weight than the old 6Ks I have been wearing but felt much more form fitting.

I've been wear testing the stallion 500 shoulders since September and I have to say they are pretty incredible. They are comfortable to wear and sit perfectly on the shoulders. I've been hit pretty hard while wearing these and have not felt a single thing. The foam just wicks away the sweat so they don't get heavy or smell at all. I'm quite impressed with what STX is bringing to the table.

If I were to guess I'd say sometime between mid-April and mid-June. I don't have any concrete dates, but that's when most new equipment is released.

Has anyone heard what pricing might be like on these? I was looking at RBZ shoulder and elbow pads but now I'm thinking about waiting. For those of you who have seen them already: how's the spine protection on the surgeon 500? It looks rather thin in the catalog picture.

Protection also looks thin on Instagram. They just posted a picture of him

Wearing it yesterday. Interesting part is that the shoulder caps are much higher on the shoulders than most models. Seem very form fitting.

We just saw the line... the Surgeon 500 protection is incredible. Some of the lightest best fitting shoulders I've tried on, incredibly low profile. The elbow pads - I will be putting these on myself when we get them. I have had the Warrior Projekts for years (Blue ones) and those are by far my favorite elbows...these blow them out of the water. Incredibly comfortable.

Sticks must not be moving. On clearance in mn stores. Have never seen on in a HS or beer game.

Minnesota market is messed up in fairness though.

When I played in the cities I saw 1 or 2 people in the Mako 2 stick - once they went on clearance everyone had them.

You also may not notice the Stallion in a game live - its an all black stick with a little bit of yellow, looks very similar to Nexus & Stealth sticks.
