If you find a lemon lime you like, let me know. I prefer just lime, but a nice citrus would be good.

Actually, I'd love to find a grapefruit cream!

JR where do you get your cryo'd blades for your Headblade? Funny thing, I come to this site because I started playing hockey again after 15 years and end up learning to wet shave(:

EJ 89 razor, Astra blades, and a Headblade. Thanks guys!

A boar brush will be crap in comparison to badger, but for the price its worth seeing if you're allergic. Not that that guarantees you'll be okay with badger hair, but if boar turns out bad I probably would go straight to synthetic. You can probably get a boar hair brush for like $10.

the Badger brush and stand came in already but i won't be able to try them since Whitney went into labor so the most important is her health and our son now.

Great thread.

I have a pretty thick beard and I'm happy with my set up. I shave in the shower, last thing I do so my beard is nice and soft. I like Cooling / Medicated Gel and once a year I get a Truefitt and Hill tub from my Brother for Xmas. Both do the job for me.

My dad has tried to get me to use an electric razor but I just don't like them. I've stuck with disposable cartridges, I'm currently using the Schick Hydro Five.

So my question has always been how long can I use a blade? I usually replace it every 5-10 shaves I guess. If I cut myself I know it was too late.

How long do you guys go b4 replacing blades?

Also I came across this today when I was buying blades. Has anyone every had sucess?

Also I'd love to learn how to use the single barber style blade. Those are always the best shaves, I can go days with out even thinking about needed a shave but I'm afraid to try it myself. Plus it's quite an investment.

BTW I'm 45.

A straight razor is quite the jump. You may want to bridge that gap by trying a double-edged safety razor. Try to get your hands on a decent brush and some soap or cream (if it comes in a can, stay away).

so far i have shaved three times with the badger brush, havent had tmuch time to shave now that Max is born and i can say it lathers a whole lot better, i'm not allergic to it thankfully, but like brushes i hate that it feels like it splits never uniformed after the first time of use. it does release hair too but not as bad as a crappy boar brush like my last one.

I just bought some new soaps from mamabears. mamabearssoaps.com

I got some lime soap, and a bunch of small samplers of various types (including a couple novelty, like bacon! lol)

Also got an alum block... really feels good after a shave.

I've really got to pick up a safety razor and start wet shaving. The hydro 5 I've been using has been giving me a really bad dry skin condition at the corners of my mouth called angular chelitis, it's really uncomfortable, really gnarly looking, and requires a lot of work to get rid of. My initial though was to go back to a 3 blade razor, but I'm still having problems so it's time for a safety razor. Any suggestions?

This is a classic, and a good starting point for anyone: http://www.westcoast...Razor_p_31.html

They sell packs of various brands of razor blades, get one of those: http://www.westcoast...hoice_p_20.html what works for me (feather) may not be for you. Get a badger hair brush (even an inexpensive one, stay away from boar) .. here's an example. Go up as high as you can afford with the brush. http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Vulfix-1000A-Pure-Badger-Shaving-Brush-Faux-Ebony_p_935.html, and pick up a soap or cream. Proraso is "the standard", so again that may be a good starting point: http://www.westcoast...Cream_p_59.html

Relatively on topic but I thought it might interest some of you. The below advert is for a shaving brand called "Bluebeard's Revenge" and they used the local EPL team Milton Keynes Lightning to promote it. Overly cheesey but, you know, hockey related and its about the manly subject of shaving.

alum, not aluminum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alum

Its an astringent. It closes the pores instantly after a shave. You just wet it and rub it on your clean-shaven face. Nice cooling effect too. A tiny bit of stinging if you had a harsh shave. Helps prevent razor burn and bumps.

However, it tastes really bad (about the same taste as shampoo) so I usually rinse with cold water after I use it.

This is the block I have. Damn thing lasts forever. http://www.westcoastshaving.com/Alum-Block-4oz115g_p_67.html

Kinda. Those are usually to stop bleeding from minor nicks (and often have alum in them). An alum block is more to close the pores and prevent irritation. Same principal though.

Just got a Thiers-Issard straight razor. 4th shave with it tonight - starting to get the hang of it, was able to go with-the-grain, then across-the-grain and finished against-the-grain. Definitely a big improvement over Mach 3. Using Proraso soap and a cheap synthetic shaving brush. I'm currently stropping with some thick leather, but I'm considering getting a real strop and a honing set.

i usually shave every 2nd day as if i shave every day, my skin gets really irritated and sore. use a mach 3 with schick cream.

The second sentence is the reason for the first one :)
