It's called "Hockey Skills" at the rink where I work - naturally, some of the other guys in the shop and I have to refer to it as "Hockey Skills-lacking."

The Open Hockey session that usually goes on after my team's practices is jokingly referred to as "The Varsity Skate" in the dressing room.

I actually hate hockey phrases. When someone says someone "had a cup of coffee" for this team or that, all I can think of is how desperately they want to sound like they know what they are talking about.

I used to like "stab" for a glove-save, "pigged" for getting poke-checked (ie. 'pig-in-a-poke'), and "Billy/Hexy" for a goalie who goes off the rails and attacks an opposing player, but those aren't aging well.

I heard a great one the other week for an obvious roller-on-ice guy trying to throw every move in the book while accomplishing nothing with the puck, and otherwise doing doughnuts at centre-ice: "Icecapades." Didn't help that he was wearing white 9K's... (Disclaimer: I have nothing against roller, roller players, or roller guys playing ice, or even cherry-pickers [Hey, another hockey-phrase!]... I just don't like wingnuts in general, and enjoy anything that exposes them to the just contempt of their fellow men.)

I also don't have anything in particular against hockey phrases, as long as it's not total grandstanding. It's like anything else - the lawyers I play with can't stand it when some blowhard starts shooting off about 'precedent' or 'jurisprudence' without knowing the first damn thing about it. Same thing with philosophers and "ethics," or just about any other field that trickles verbiage into the 'General Knowledge' category.

Dangle Session = skate and shoot / pick up hockey

We use DangleFest/Snipeshow. Sometimes even DangleFestSnipeShow all kinda rolled into one if its a really wide talent spread.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Gongshow.

I didn't know what "snipe" was until a few years ago when I was in the press box doing stats for my grad school club team. Dudes who didn't dress for the game were all, "Oh he got sniped" and I figured out it's when you get hit by the puck.

I just say "got hit by the puck".

i don't know how it started but on my team last year we started saying that a guy got "enjoyed" when he got laid out like a big open ice hit. to be honest i think we said it more playing 08 and 09 then in actaul games. also used the term "umbergered" once in a while for the same purpose.

also through some sort of abbreviation mishap we started calling a guy going coast to coast, C to C. which was fine until everyone started callin it "country hopping"

Chevilles molles or il patine sur la bottine - French for Ankle bender

Dans la lucarne - French for top shelf, roofer etc. Actually taken from French Football (Soccer) Announcers in France. Most of the time we use the English terms or just say Top Net

Not hockey related but a priceless moment - My friend's a black belt in Karate and got into a verbal argument with a guy twice is size and that guy was aware of my friend's credential. Then the argument escalated and my friend kinda threaten to kick the other guy's ass...

The guy said: I'm not afraid of you

My friend replied: You won't have time to be afraid

Seemed like there was always one kid on my teams growing up each year who would get this yelled at him by the coach "I gonna tape your hands to your stick". One of them actually meant it. :D

I had a coach who litteraly taped a kid's bottom hand to his stick for practice once... One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I've been threatening to put weights on my goalies' sticks if they don't keep them on the ice - and now I have the equipment to follow through with that threat! Even if I only use it on two of two dozen, the message will get across. :)

A guy in my pickup hour in a cage was yapping to one of the older guys that skates (no cage, no visor)... the older cat says to him "If you're gonna chirp little birdie, at least come out of the cage..." it was simple, and to the point but had a lot of us cracking up. They ended up getting in a scuffle 15 minutes later.

I've heard "need a little sauce on that" and such to mean get it up, as in a saucer pass, then taken to mean oompf behind a pass or shot, but now I hear kids saying "dirty sauce" "check out his sauce" and using it as a general style qualifier. Makes me think of my grandma calling the waiter at Denny's a "Saucy fellow".

It should just be for a saucer pass. Any other hockey usage is wrong.
