Gas prices

Recommended Posts

It's been like that for the last seventy years though. After the war, Europe built rail not roads. And actually, the eu is more 'socialist' then the us is. Hello airbus?

My comment was more direct at the US government stake in the auto industry. I don't think anyone wants to get into a "how socialist or not is the Obama administration?" discussion. I know I don't.

How anyone can justify buying a Hummer is beyond me.

One thing Governments could do to try and stop people buying Hummers, Dodge Rams and other big pickups when they don't need it would be to put a extra tax on top of the regular taxes and purchase price. They could also hike the prices for driver's licence and vehicle registration for those who buy gas guzzlers when they actually have no need for them. If you are a contractor or actually need a truck for your job wether self employed or not, then you get a tax credit at the end of the year equivalent to what you paid extra for your driver's licence and registration. This would not stop joe bonehead from buying himself a Hummer to look super duper ubber super freaking cool but at least Governments would rack in some extra dough which could in turn be used for healthcare or upkeeping roads, bridges and such.

There is a gas guzzler tax on vehicles that get stupid low gas mileage. I think certain Corvettes have this tax applied. That's the only vehicle I can think of off the top of my head, but there are many more. I want to say it's about $1,500.

You're being ridiculous. Who are you (or the government) to say whether or not someone NEEDS a certain type of vehicle?

That's like someone saying you should be taxed because you have two pairs of gloves when you only need one pair!

Get real.

I'm 90% sure that Joe Schmo living on Long Island, New York where there are zero offroad trails does not NEED his dodge ram Hemi with 25inch chrome wheels that have barely any tire wrapped around it.

John Doe who owns a contracting company that needs supplies and tools every day NEEDS something with space, so he would warrant owning that pickup.

Take a look around, you can spot people driving cars/trucks that are quite unnecessary. If they want to drive them, fine. They should have to pay more though.

Your glove analogy makes little to no sense FYI. Following your logic, people with two cars should get taxed?

What's next, a tax on certain sized flatscreen tvs, maybe a composite stick allotment of 3 per year? How about we tax folks who take more than 2 flying vacations a year? Do they really need to visit Florida, Bermuda, and their folks in Phoenix all in the same year?

No, this whole argument is based off of NEED, hence the glove argument because it's obvious you don't NEED two pairs of gloves if you can only use one pair at a time.

Again, who are YOU to say what a person needs and doesn't need? As an aside, who cares if they need it or not? It's their CHOICE to buy a type of vehicle.

You people aren't getting it about the "paying more" part. Reread Chadd and Chippa's posts.

Yeah! We should tax any TV's bigger than 10". Color TV is double taxed because no one NEEDS color TV. HD TV is triple taxed.

I can bitch a little bit since the price of gas has nothing to do with supply and demand. I have stated for years that oil should not be traded as a commodity and that we invaded the wrong Middle Eastern country if we truly were after the oil.

The supply of oil is a manipulation game. We could be swimming in oil but then 1 of the 5,000 or so Saudi princes wouldn't have 2 dozen Mercedes. Also, as stated before, speculation plays a big part in the price of gas. Not to mention, some event that could impact future oil shouldn't effect current gas prices but we see it all the time. Gas is the only product where potential future inventories impact what it costs to buy current inventories.

It's really simple, drive whatever you want, as long as you don't bitch, moan, and whine about gas prices.

$4/gallon gas is ridiculous, I think everyone has a right to do any of the above.

You are very ignorant on middle eastern culture, and its mentality towards them like that as to why they hate us. That's a completely different subject altogether.

It's equivalent to ten a gallon in Europe, and they don't bitch.

Personally I'd love to see taxes on it go thru the roof with taht money used towards alternative fuels and rail infrastructure.

Actually California is already looking into things like banning certain size TV's due to energy usage. That tax may be sooner than you think.....lol.

I'd say that it's a good thing people with lower mileage cars end up paying more. Hopefully that'll create a trend. I'm personally tired of seeing Joey Bag-o-donuts driving around in his 8mpg Hummer complaining that he pays too much for gas. Or all the idiots daily driving pickup trucks with Hemi's in them. If you feel you need to drive a truck that isn't economical in the least, you should have to pay.

What about guys like me who are 6'7 and do not fit in tiny ass cars! What needs to happen is they need to release the turbo diesel motors that all cars get in Europe! Then all size vehicles would get better mpg!

This is America dude. We can drive what we want. My dads Commander got 12 MPGs. If consumers chose to buy cars with low MPGs, they spend more on gas. Why should they get additionally taxed. That's retarded. Back to the TV example, why should someone have to pay more for a 70" TV than a 26". If it consumes more energy, the electric bill will reflect that. I guess since I'm not in construction though, I'll go buy a Prius asap.

I'm also 6'7 and agree with that 100%!

There are tons of cars that you will fit into. Don't stereotype every euro car for a Fiat 500 or Smart car. There are plenty of options.

I think a lot of thinks are super overpriced but i don't bitch about it but i know i cant do ANYTHING about it. If you don't like the price, don't drive or get over it. What good is bitching going to do?

what? explain please

Saudi is now producing around 8.5 to 8.6 million bpd, and the reason for the drop is just slower market demand," said a Saudi-based industry source.
Oil prices have risen by more than 30 percent this year to more than $125 for Brent crude, their highest since July 2008, as a wave of unrest has disrupted output in OPEC member Libya and heightened investor fears it could destabilise bigger producers.

However, members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries have repeatedly said the oil market is well supplied and have blamed the price rise on speculation.

The problem I have with gas prices is that they go up a lot faster than they come down. Here you'll get a 5 to 10 cent increase overnight when the barrel goes up a buck or two in the week but the prices will decrease by 1 cent every week for 1 month even though the barrel has gone down 5 bucks in one week. Then when it's gone down 5 cents, you get another 10 cent increase...

agreed! Basically went from 2.68 in early march and this sunday when i filled up it was 3.69, three weeks ago it was 3.89 but it dipped oddly enough

Settle down, Beavis, you'll soil yourself.......... It is called hyperbole, exaggeration used to express an idea.

Taxing gas through the roof would go very much against the Obama administration's support of the middle class, as that is the segment of America that would be most hurt by such a tax. An expanded rail system won't get mom to and fro the grocery store and picking up the kids from soccer practice. Exploring alternative fuels is fine but given the fact that those attempted so far have been relative flops, I would prefer that my good tax dollars aren't just good money thrown after bad. The government has already proven it doesn't handle cash very well, I'm not about to endorse giving them more of it.

A better way to support new ideas would be to offer tax breaks for those who are investigating and investing in the research, at least that is my opinion.

My statement was not saying that all euro cars are fiats or smart cars. My statement is that here in the states if you want good mileage you have to buy a small car. I do not fit in many of them! My head hits the roof! My complaint is that they need to release the same motors that are available over in Europe here. There is a turbo diesel that Land Rover has been using that gets 30 mpg on the freeway that is powerful enough to be in a full size f-150! Why do we still have the 14 mpg motor in Land Rovers and the Ford F150? Instead they give us the eco-boost v6 that gets 21 mpg! Volvo just came out with a turbo diesel hybrid that can get 100 mpg. They will be releasing the gas version in the states that gets 40 mpg! It is ridiculous that the rest of the world gets the same vehicles with better mileage! I understand they pay more per liter or gallon but come on! Let us have the technology as well!
