Adult Hockey Clinic in Central Jersey
caveman27 replied to KelpFries's topic in General Hockey Discussions
It's rare to have adult ice hockey instruction, kind of like looking for adult instruction in basketball or baseball; there's an assumption that you played basketball or baseball as a child and as an adult, you are going to play it in amateur adult leagues. As for hockey tactics and skills, there are various youtube videos that can sort of help out. But nothing can replace on-ice instruction and practice. -
How should this 3 vs 2 been played?
caveman27 replied to VegasHockey's topic in General Hockey Discussions
I can understand not laying someone out in a non-checking league. What I try to do in one-on-one's is force them outside, block the puck with my feet if they try the "pass the puck between his legs and go around him and pick it up" move, stick-on-puck to block shot attempts, poke check, and it it's a patient puck handler who sees he can't get around me, he'll turn away at the goal line and give himself space and time for a pass. That or he's a faster skater who gets around me, dangles and snipes and the rest is up to the goalie. -
Well, I have no recommendations for shoulder pads, but I have a recommendation against getting Easton. They fit well on the shoulders and provide protection over the deltoids, upper chest and upper arms, but I do have some exposure in the belly area. There's a gap between the belly flap and the top of my pants. This is for my last two shoulder pads which are Easton S13 and Easton Stealth CX. I haven't been hit there, but I can see the gap before I put my jersey on.

How should this 3 vs 2 been played?

It was a nice breakout play, where the guy skating backwards passes it back to the other forward with forward momentum instead of turning and skating it in himself. Of course, he had to slow himself down or he would be offside. 25 already had backward momentum and the backwards pass ruined 25's timing and created time and space. If 25 slowed down to engage the puck-handler around the blue line, he would become a stand-still obstacle. If the puck handler gets around him, it becomes a three-on-one. -
Could you tell us about forward bend? Are you an aggressive skater and your upper body is bending forward while skating? You feel like your boots are like ski boots, you get no toe flick, and/or you feel like you are on cross-country skis or speed skates?

Wow, people are selling donjoy braces online? Not sure if there's going to be a crackdown, that's a prescription-only medical device unless laws have changed. I have a Breg, but not for hockey use. I got it decades ago. Still good as new as I hardly used it. It's too wide for the pants and shin pads.

How to specify the heel/toe shape of skate blades?
caveman27 replied to dsizzle's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Interesting. Maybe no pitch adjustment is needed, but I can see why you are having issues with sprint-like acceleration and deep turns. Does it feel like the skates are forcing your chest upright when you are bending deep into a cross over acceleration and you lose balance from it? -

Yes, pitch would affect your skating at all times. -

It would nice if OP posted pictures of his old blades and new blades. Those who are sharpeners might get a better idea of what would work without having to bring your blades to a shop multiple times. -
How to specify the heel/toe shape of skate blades?
caveman27 replied to dsizzle's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
If you reprofiled from a 10' to a 9' radius and you didn't notice a difference and you are experiencing tripping while accelerating, you might try an 8 foot radius with aggressive pitch. Another option is to do a combination radius, and get a 7 or 8 foot radius on the front half and a 9 or 10 radius on the back half also with aggressive pitch. You could also stick with a 9 foot radius and just try altering it to have an aggressive pitch. Also, what is your height and weight, skate size? -

I thought you said you had Supreme 2S pros, which have the TUUK Lightspeed 5, a removable blade holder. -
Well, you can either try bauer 7.5 R, or CCM 7.5 EE. Also, another thing to try is Bauer 7.0 EE. Your mileage may vary when it comes to going down in size for a tighter fit.

Well, that's early in years. Sorry to hear that. I've been lifting weights for years, like since 1989, and last year, I had hip arthoscopy because of hip pain, it would catch sometimes. The doctor just cleaned up some cartilage. He was going to shave down the bone too a bit where he saw it was pinching, or cam shaped, but after he got in with the arthroscope, he didn't bother shaving the bone down because there was so much worn out cartilage that he saw I would be getting a hip replacement soon anyway, so it wouldn't be worth going through the pain of recovering from shaved bone. He's estimating a hip replacement in two years. It feels better after the arthroscopy though. Oh, and an MRI in the hip is not a regular MRI. They have to inject a dye so stuff shows up. For that, they have to x-ray your hip while inserting in the needle with the dye. But, they first have to inject local anesthesia, first on the outside, and a second one that is deeper. Then, they aim the x-ray camera at your hip and the person sticks the needle with the dye deep into the hip, guiding the tip in while watching the x-ray monitor. This is one of the most painful experiences I have ever had. Then, you go to the MRI room within 30 minutes and get that done. And if you want to temporarily reduce pain with a cortisone shot in the hip, it's the same thing as the dye injection. The doctor uses the x-ray monitor to guide the tip of the needle inside the hip. I had that done years before. It's not a tiny needle.

OK. Well, if that is what floats your boat, that's fine. Not sure why you want the extra weight of extra padding if you aren't taking on NHL level hits and shots.
-
What I specifically meant to ask is "why do you want pro-stock pants with extra padding over pro-stock pants with normal amount of padding?" I bought pro stock CCM pants too, but without X or XTRA in the model name.
-
How much extra padding do you need in men's league hockey that regular pro-level pants can't handle?
-
Warrior Franchise is more traditional fit. I don't know about the fit of Covert models though. Not really sure if you need extra padding, they are heavier in weight but can handle clap bombs to the thighs.

They weren't going to tell veteran team mates to sit out for the new guy. You seemed to have been shafted from the git go.

So, I tore my ACL during a fencing tournament in the late summer. I wasn't playing hockey or skating at that time. Fall came around and I wasn't playing any hockey after I found out my ACL was torn. I got the surgery in the winter and it took awhile to rehab, after recovery. I got a graft from my patella and I my range of motion after surgery wasn't progressing as well as the doctor wanted to see. I went to physical therapy to help with range of motion. They also hooked up this machine to send electric pulses to my quads to get them to activate during therapy. That was fun and weird. It was probably eleven months before I was 100% good to go with any sports, and going 100% in the gym with leg workouts. I was a bit worried on my first time on the ice, but I was able to do everything, hockey stop, t-stop, crossovers, skating backwards, etc. without a brace. Probably doesn't answer your question since I wasn't back to playing after my injury. But, the thing that told me something was wrong was when I was walking and then, I stopped and turned left, I would get a sharp pain in the middle of my knee. Kind of like a little tiny knife held by a mean leprechaun who magically poked only the inside of my knee on the same 2mm spot. This was happening well after the swelling was gone. Then, it would also happened when I was pivoting to turn on my left foot. Of course, my right knee was fine and I could turn and/or pivot on my right foot without problems. Walking straight, going up and down stairs, and doing squats in the gym wasn't a problem either.

Montreal Canadiens team equipment sale. 9 to 3 PM at the Bell Centre.
-
Oh, I mean street pants, not hockey pants.
-
What is your height, weight, current pant waist size?
-
Oh. I had a pair of Nike/Bauer One75 goalie skates. I usually wear 6D in Bauers, but had these in 6EE because I found them on sale for super cheap. Even after I tightened up the laces. My feet could move a bit because it was a bit too wide. I hated them.
