By the time this contract ends Parayko will be underpaid and I'm not sure how he is going to fall out of his prime at 29 years of age. That is pretty much the sweet spot for NHL defensemen. If the Blues wanted to take him to a max length contract of 8 years then they would have had to pony up a hell of a lot more cash in order to buy those extra 3 years. In my estimation this was a good deal for both sides and Parayko will still have the chance to seriously cash in on his next contract.

That AAV will be a bargain by year 4.

if you're thinking Crosby then the closest existing that I know of would be the Kariya Pro, and the Crosby is even flatter than that.

My guess is that any interested teams contacted Kovalchuk's agent and once they learned he wasn't coming back this season they figured there was no point to pursue it.

5-6 years from now that contract will be a bargain, well, except that there will most likely be another lockout tossed in there somewhere.

He has said thru his agent that he will be spending the upcoming season in the KHL. If it is true that NJ loses all rights to him in Summer 2018 then what can they possibly get for him? The answer is not much since any team would just be dealing for the exclusive bargaining rights between the end of the KHL season and July 1. There is no big return that NJ can expect.

We're due for another lockout soon so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

I agree with Stewie. Marleau has basically been a wing for SJ for the last several years. He won't see the full 3 years in Toronto. My guess is he'll be a deadline trade during year 2 or wheeled around the 2019 draft.
