2011-2012 Suspension thread

Recommended Posts

He does that in just about every game, nothing will happen to him.

You weren't joking about Malkin. Another game, another dirty hit on Couturier...again.

He needs to stop. He's been doing it forever though. I would say he is going to get suspended soon when more people take notice but everyone knows that wont happen. Unfortunately the only way it will end is when someone gets SERIOUSLY injured then the league will have to suspend him. Bad situation.

Not only does he do it to people on the other team, he even gave Crosby a pretty good head shot the other day.

Now were talking!

Keep it at that level and equal no matter your status in the league, the players and teams is going to get it.

Anyone think Torres would have got fewer games without the Weber situation?

One case should not affect another.

But maybe shanny sprinkled it with 5-10 extra games, just to set a tone again

We can hope the NHL learned something from not suspending Weber -- we'll see. This suspension invites more criticism, both because it seems to be using a different scale, and because there may be some make-up for the Weber non-suspension. Hopefully they'll move forward with some consistency, regardless of whether a player is a star.

Shanahan silences his critics with this one?

Only if he follows through with these actions to other players, otherwise its just a large ban to a repeat offender

5 time repeat offender with headshots/charges and breaks 3 rules in the process of laying out Hoss. I think Shanny was sending him a message, change or gtfo.

I don't think so. In fact, I think it's exactly the opposite. Andy Sutton has been suspended 8 or 9 times and his last suspension was for less than ten games.

Anyone think Torres would have got fewer games without the Weber situation?

I think the sponsors complaining about the on-ice product had far more to do with it than the reaction to Weber's fine.

Raffi getting 25 means nothing if the next guy who does something stupid only gets 2. When things are consistent and roles players who hit stars, and stars who hit other stars all get the same suspensions...THEN he will have sent his message.

Raffi getting 25 has more to do with him being Raffi Torress than the hit. What Weber did was disgusting and not remotely a hockey play, and he only got a $2,500 fine. The stars of the gam are given to many exceptions and now this is where we stand.

Completely agree, I think this was more a message towards Torres. Malkin should've been suspended twice already this post season (grossman and couturier head hits.)

25 games for Torres. Sounds right. Like Darren Dreger said, its 3-5 games for anyone else, this is a message directly to Torres himself. Prior history makes this jump from 5 to 25 games. I agree wholeheartedly.

I also don'tt hink it has anything to do with inconsistency in how many games he gets vs what a star gets, I think it's just his prior history warrants it.

Completely agree! Torres is now in the same position as Matt Cooke found himself in at the end of last season. I wonder if Torres thinks this is how he has to play to stay in the league since his scoring is down. I swear some players step on the ice and decide to be reckless. It's time all players realize the game can be physical but there is no need to obliterate your opponent.

Why didn't his prior history seem to be such a significant factor the last time he did it?

Let's compare and contrast the situation with this one from earlier in the season:

25 is a lot, especially in the playoffs, and it didn't help that he hurt a well-liked star. It may even be enough to get his attention.

We can hope this is an indication that the NHL is finally starting to get serious, rather than simply a different standard for different players.

Absolutely. So Torres is out but so is Hossa. Which has a bigger effect? Teams can get their fourth line goons to take a run at a star and put them out of contention and take the suspension for the fourth liner as the cost of neutralizing an opponent. Yes, repeat offenders should be penalized for their recidivism but the rules should be fairly consistent across the board. Make every coach and player aware that they could screw their team if they act like idiots. Weber should have been suspended for his non-hockey play goon tactic on Zetterberg. Taking him out of the lineup would have harmed the Preds enormously and the message would get through to everyone to play smart.

All they can do is increase suspensions on repeat offenders until they get the message, or they're gone, with indefinite or lifetime suspensions. Cooke's history gives us hope that there's a point at which they can get a player's attention.

Some folks here have at times suggested that a team play with its bench a man short as part of the league's discipline, and it would seem most appropriate for repeat offenders.
