The Smartphone Thread

Recommended Posts

First off, don't update your phone through verizon or Motorola. Use custom ROM's built from the newest updates instead like CyanogenMOD 7.0 for example. But like other have said z4root is a good way to go I've heard the name tossed around elsewhere with good remarks. or go into recovery mode and flash back to an older build if you saved it.

I never got into ROM's. I guess I need to wipe it

Well, since I dropped my iPhone in a pool yesterday I am going to need a new phone. I have an update, so I am looking to get a nicer smartphone again. Im on Verizon, and im looking for a 4g phone. Anyone know if the Charge is much better than the Thunderbolt? I can get a pre-owned TB for around $175 and the Charge is $300 IIRC. Is the Charge worth that much more? Its either the Charge, or the Thunderbolt and new shins and elbows :D Let me know you opinions.

The Thunderbolt has battery issues, Charge has better camera I believe. I'm personally waiting for a dual core 4g phone (Droid Bionic) but if you must buy one now I think the Charge is better. Worth another 125 dollars though, I dunno.

Charge is definitely better, as Joshison said, the Thunderbolt has extreme battery issues. I was debating between the two as well, but I definitely am glad I got the Charge. If you do go with it, make sure you splurge on the 49.99 multimedia dock. It comes with an extra battery in it that if you were to buy the two items seperately, it'd cost you around 90 bucks.

Got my HP TouchPad today - really enjoying it so far. It's allowed me to separate myself from the laptop when doing non-intensive tasks. Not seeing the problems listed in several reviews. It'll be even better when SMS comes to it next month (the ability to answer phone calls redirected from the phone is enabled now)

JR, have you used the iPad or any of the android based tablets for comparison to the HP WebOS for initial impressions?

Yeah. webOS really translates well on a big screen. iPad is nice but does not fit my needs; I played with the Xoom and 10.1 Galaxy Tab and Honeycomb is just a mess.

The Droid 3 is looking real tempting, honestly. After using 4G for a solid month plus, I don't see too much of a difference between 3G and 4G, and the Droid 3 is looking like a beast. Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I've never really followed this thread but I figured I'd ask: Has anyone with an iPhone 4 had problems with the power button not working on their phone? I just replaced my second phone with the exact same problem in under a year. So now I'm on my third i4 and my apple care expires on the 21st. I'm thinking about spending the $70 knowing the luck I've had with this model.

Just ordered the HTC Sensation 4g. We are on t-mobile and don't want to change carriers. Anyone use them? Came out mid June I think, so been out about a month.

Get great reviews, and to be honest, I'm coming from a crappy assed Window 6.1 mobile phone.

Also, any must get apps. I'm into hockey, beer, homebrewing, football (soccer) and music. Any app suggestions would be much appreciated

The Hockey News app is a must-have. I don't know if they have it on Android but I know apple and blackberry both have it and it really is fantastic. Gotten me through many a boring lecture and bowel movement.

Does anybody have any good iPhone-related blogs they follow? Looking for some, kind of the way Droid-Life is for Android.

Thanks for that. For anyone who follows the iPhone closely, is holding out for the 5 a necessity? I was thinking of getting the 4, but if the 5 is going to be drastically different than the 4, I'd hold out.

I guess it depends if they come out with a '4S' type gig or a 5. The iPhone 4 is as fast as I need. Everything opens pretty much instantaneously, no lag on anything. The camera is also amazing for being a 5 megapixel. The quality of pictures is crazy good. Better than my moms 12 megapixel Olympus which was just over $100 I think. Again, it depends on what they actually come out with, but the 4 is a great phone

edit: the other thing about iPhone's is the resale value. I got the iPhone 3G when it came out for $50 refurbished, then right before the iPhone 4 came out I sold it for $215 and bought the iPhone 4. You can pretty much upgrade for free just by selling the old phone. you can still sell iPhone 4s for over $400 used on eBay

The 6 will be different from the 5, which will be different from the 4, which is different from the you get what I'm saying? There will always be a better/faster/thinner/whatever version, so why fret about it? Buy it when you want it, not when everyone else thinks you should.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/hp-punts-on-webos-discontinues-touchpad-cuts-outlook/55386?tag=content;feature-roto

"HP said Thursday that it will discontinue its WebOS operations as the company cut its outlook for the next two quarters. The company will also acquire Autonomy, an enterprise information retrieval outfit.

The company said it ”will discontinue operations for webOS devices”, specifically the TouchPad and WebOS phones. In April 2010, HP talked about doubling down on Palm and the WebOS. And that WebOS unit will cost HP some dough to discontinue. HP will also spin off its PC unit—almost 10 years after the company bought Compaq."

Sorry JR..

I've been trying to score one of the touchpads on closeout today, but everyone that marked them down is sold out. If anyone sees one, please let me know where or grab one for me.

Once Best Buy returns theirs to HP, there will be more.

I'm just trying to get a price adjustment. HP is negotiating with resellers.

This could be a boon to the community, using the TP as a loss leader.

The problem is going to be getting in line when the BB inventory goes back. Have to time it just right.

Id like to pick one up for my brother when they come back around hopefully, but not disappointed if i dont get one. Apparently people were lined up at stores here. One of the local walmarts refused to sell them at that price for a while (manager said to wait, even tho they were advertised in store at the sale price). 20+ sold within 3 hours there. a couple people bought 3 or 4.

however,

I did get an Asus EEEpad about 2 weeks ago. I really love it.
