That can happen between brands. You'll notice the same thing in NHL team gloves and helmets.

Looks like a more simple problem to me

Half team ordered Royal/Red/White, other half is in Navy/Red/White

That is different colorway options, not difference between brands.

The difference between brands would be Easton helmets in White and everyone else in White. The Easton looks "whiter".

I know that - it appears as if Bauer & some Easton are in Royal/Red/White, while Warrior and CCM/Reebok are Navy/Red/White. Some Bauer's don't appear to be Navy, all look to be Royal.

Edit: I was going to say dating back to his Bauer Supremes, pre-705's, as seen here. He skated in Heel-wedged Tacks without that strapping. Maybe the heel wedge really worked for him.
