Sparx Skate Sharpener - At home sharpener
start_today replied to tamtamg's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Ok, I need some Sparx trouble shooting help. Sharpened my skates myself on a Sparx machine, first time I have personally done it. Used a brand new 3/4” fire wheel, which is my normal go to. It felt like way more bite than usual. Had pure hockey redo it, and it’s fine. Not great, but fine. I usually take them to a shop that does an outstanding job on a Sparx, it’s just 45 minutes each way. Obviously user error by me, but I thought I followed all the directions. Are there any typical newb errors that might lead to the blade feeling like too much bite? Machine isn’t mine. It’s a friend of a friend’s and I don’t know how well he maintains it. Thanks! -
Prostock smalls with a +2 might be the thing. I’m often between a medium waist and large length, and the extensions help me.

Anyone try the Powerfly holders yet?
start_today replied to pucks_putts's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Yeah, but this never, ever happened. And, edge holders definitely didn’t consistently get loose after a year or two and you had to put tape on the top of the steel to keep it from moving in the holder. Bauer products are perfect. They don’t make mistakes or have quality issues. -
Bauer Profile Cages - differences
start_today replied to xstartxtodayx's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
Thanks for the breakdown! My wife has this same problem last(?) summer. She’s been in profile cages for a while and got a new helmet and cage and immediately was like “this isn’t right, do not want,” and we tracked down an older one on sideline swap. On the other hand, I’ve used a variety of cages with different helmets and I barely, if ever, notice the difference. I totally believe people when they get all picky about bar shape and face distance, but I just don’t notice it. -
To those who have DIY D3O on their equipment...
start_today replied to Westside's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I didn’t use D30, but I added VN foam to shinguards around the knee. I cut it to the shapes I wanted, and attached it to the pad, rather than the liner. I went closer to the “slab” approach than donut. To affix it, I doubled over duct tape, and it held everything with no issues. It wasn’t sexy but it held up perfectly fine. Prior to that, I had landed at just the wrong angle on my knee a few times and had inflamed bursa issues, but it stopped after added the padding. -
Do you have any friends or teammates or non-enemies who would let you borrow their 85 flex and see if you like playing with it? (or borrow it from an enemy, but then really lean hard into a bunch of slapshots with it.) After cutting the 95 flex you’re probably getting to be around 100, so the 85 might feel like a significant drop, but the trend for the past decade is people going down in flex. It’s all personal preference but using a ~100 flex stick just seems like a lot.

[VINCENT]I know, baby, you'd dig it the most...But you know what the funniest thing about Europe is?[JULES]What?[VINCENT] Its the little differences. I mean, they got the same shit over there they got here, but, it's just, just, there it's a little different.[JULES]Example? [Vincent] Their FT6 Pros are 20 points stiffer.

I think that’s the best part. Elite-elite level NHL player with huge holes in his palms and colors in his gloves with paint markers he bought at Michaels. He clearly doesn’t care about aesthetics.

CCM FT4 Pro Skates - eyelets wrecked first use
start_today replied to colins's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
What is facing? Thanks! -
Does that tool offer something that the tool the comes with edge holders doesn’t? For the non-pro equipment manager, what’s the advantage here?

That’s what kinda confuses me about his selection, that he is choosing to produce and stock. There are 69 p28 variants available to ship right now that are more or less the exact same, but not a basic 88 clone. I would love to just hand this guy some of my money, and he’s making it inconvenient. And I stubbornly don’t want to do a custom order because it costs slightly more and takes more time, but I whine about it for 2 months and my stick would have been here by now. On the other hand, I kinda love that he is a mad scientist just doing things his way and is like “screw your basic needs, you can buy this curve that’s a p28 mixed with a p28 with a 5.6 lie, or you can go somewhere else.”
-
But this new stick goes to 11!

I’m an idiot and can’t use a tape measure. Move along now, move along.

My friend wears a cate eye cage from Warwick goalie masks in Michigan. They make at least one cage specific to players. Looks like it’s currently out, but he just bought it a few months ago, so I assume they restock https://www.warwickmaskcompany.com/product-category/replacement-cagesreplacement-goalie-cages-new-cage-for-eddy-sportmaskolieitechbauer-replacement-cage/

Someone write a sci-fi short story about a future dystopian hellscape of only lowkick sticks with toe curves and and super pingy blades.

The hockey community complains when they go to big box hockey stores and the employees are no help and no one has any equipment knowledge and can’t fit skates. The hockey community complains when small knowledgeable shops don’t have the return policies and discount buying power of Costco.

Thanks! How does the G63 shaft play? Is it a mid kick like the redline, or is it a different flex profile?
-
Hopefully this is like how the VH thread starts with “what are these weird skates byfuglien is wearing” comment that was originally in the gear spotting thread.
-
What are the blades on these like? Are they more on the pingy side, or more on the dampened side? Can anyone compare them to the blade on a retail stick?
-
Yeah, and their marketing materials say “Further research is necessary to determine whether the Q-Collar can provide these benefits to users.” So, seems like despite all of the testing, they can’t validate the claims.

Do any of these companies work with factories in america and/or places with verifiable labor & wage conditions? (not looking for a discussion on said issues, just asking about production locations)

Anyone have chassis mounted by Binnie’s?
start_today replied to Westside's topic in Ice Hockey Equipment
I went to him for years and years when he worked at Ko’s Sports in Pittsburgh, for both skate sharpening and he mounted a roller chasis on a pair of ice skates for me. He did a great job. Living in Boston now, we’ve still mailed steel to him for sharpening once he started his own business, because he does a great job and is reliable and quick. A+++ highly recommended. He knows his shit and is super willing to talk through things if you have specific questions or needs. -
The Q-Collar is a noninvasive solution to brain protection, and there have been no negative effects reported relating to wearing it. It may even help you perform at your optimum.* *These uses have not been evaluated or cleared by the FDA. Further research is necessary to determine whether the Q-Collar can provide these benefits to users. — If this company doesn’t also market healing crystals and reiki, they should look into expanding into those areas too.
