  1. So, I tore my ACL during a fencing tournament in the late summer. I wasn't playing hockey or skating at that time. Fall came around and I wasn't playing any hockey after I found out my ACL was torn. I got the surgery in the winter and it took awhile to rehab, after recovery. I got a graft from my patella and I my range of motion after surgery wasn't progressing as well as the doctor wanted to see. I went to physical therapy to help with range of motion. They also hooked up this machine to send electric pulses to my quads to get them to activate during therapy. That was fun and weird. It was probably eleven months before I was 100% good to go with any sports, and going 100% in the gym with leg workouts. I was a bit worried on my first time on the ice, but I was able to do everything, hockey stop, t-stop, crossovers, skating backwards, etc. without a brace. Probably doesn't answer your question since I wasn't back to playing after my injury. But, the thing that told me something was wrong was when I was walking and then, I stopped and turned left, I would get a sharp pain in the middle of my knee. Kind of like a little tiny knife held by a mean leprechaun who magically poked only the inside of my knee on the same 2mm spot. This was happening well after the swelling was gone. Then, it would also happened when I was pivoting to turn on my left foot. Of course, my right knee was fine and I could turn and/or pivot on my right foot without problems. Walking straight, going up and down stairs, and doing squats in the gym wasn't a problem either.
  2. Montreal Canadiens team equipment sale. 9 to 3 PM at the Bell Centre.
  3. Oh, I mean street pants, not hockey pants.
  4. What is your height, weight, current pant waist size?
  5. Oh. I had a pair of Nike/Bauer One75 goalie skates. I usually wear 6D in Bauers, but had these in 6EE because I found them on sale for super cheap. Even after I tightened up the laces. My feet could move a bit because it was a bit too wide. I hated them.
  6. Interesting patent case. The judge had made his final ruling, there is nothing else to say. Step Steel has a solid customer following though, and may be able to try and develop their own patented proprietary holder/blade combination. If they can make a holder out of carbon fiber, aluminum and/or titanium, they can sell a lighter holder/blade combo which would be very attractive to existing and new Step Steel customers. The other things they could get into are figure skating blades and speed skating blades.
  7. This is the first I've ever heard of this. I'm going down 1.5 sizes from shoe size to skate size, so when I lace up my skates, nothing is sliding, whether I'm in goalie skates or player skates.
  8. I have a Bauer PM9 blade. 3/8" curve keeps the long distance shots low.
  9. I have an old replacement blade (the kind you insert into a carbon fiber shaft). It's in a lie that's too steep for me so I removed it from a shaft. Maybe I'll try and heat and bend it.
  10. When it comes to carbon fiber products, the mold or core of the item determines the exterior shape of the finished product. I think the carbon fiber is laid over a pre-shaped blade core. The core has the location of the curve (toe, mid-toe, heel, mid-heel) the amount of curve (1/2", 3/4") toe shape (round, square, in between round and square). The carbon fiber is not bent or cut into the final shape but takes on the shape of the core. Since manufacturers have gotten stick weight down below 400 grams, maybe they could go back to separate shafts and blades to bring back the ability of changing blades and retaining low stick weights.
  11. I grew up in a town where the arena was less than 5 minutes away. There was an outdoor ink about a 15 minute walk away. There were other rinks about a 25 minute drive away, one east and one west. When I was in midgets, we played some games in Canada, across the border, since that was a 30 minute drive away. Since I was in a small town, the house league team had enough to field one team per level (Midget C, Bantam C, Squirt C, etc) so we played other local town teams. Where I am, one rink is 25 minutes away and the other is 35 minutes away. I have no idea where the kids play, but the nearest out-of-town rink is an hour and 15 minutes south east and another is an hour and 40 minutes north.
  12. How often do you get your skates sharpened? Wondering if your local sharpener is accidentally shaving more from the heel area, little by little, thus creating a slightly backward pitch. You feel like your skates are kicking you upright when you try to crouch forward?
  13. That other team had an interesting mix of guys who are novice skaters (45 and 33) to guys launching hard slapshots from the blue line.
  14. I got Ottawa Senators CCM pants in black. Not a huge fan of the team, but they are nice and light.
  15. I have a game this Tuesday. Looking forward to it... after a 3 week break since our last game. Scheduling in our league isn't perfect and ice time is sort of jammed up with only two rinks in the area. But, we have about a game a week from here on out which is good.
  16. It's not that bulky. I wear this on my left knee. I wear this on my right knee.
  17. There's no permanent hockey surface that I know of. But synthetic tiles can last for years if you want it down for a very long time and just replace the ones that need repair. https://www.hockeyshot.com/Revolution-Synthetic-Ice-Tiles-p/revolution-tiles.htm
  18. You could try a blade with a heel curve like P02, or a mid-heel curve like P91.
  19. I had to pick a number that wasn't my personal favorite, 27, because it wasn't available, so I chose 71 for one of my fav players Evgeni Malkin.
  20. Could be a number of things, ACL, LCL, meniscus. So, I've had ACL reconstruction. During the injury, I felt a sharp pop and limited mobility. After the injury, maybe an hour later, the knee started swelling up, like a grapefruit size and I could hardly bend it. After the swelling went down, the pain went away, but every once in a while, when I turned, I could feel a sharp pain inside the knee. So, my doctor told me to come back in a week after the swelling goes down, because the swelling could also be affecting the pain and would not provide an accurate X-ray. So, I waited. The swelling did go away. The pain was still there so I went in. I got an x-ray and physical examination. Then, he said I would need an MRI to get a better view of the insides. So, you do need to take some time for the swelling to go away to see if the pain persists afterwards. You said you got injured in a game one night ago. Once the swelling goes away, your pain symptoms may change or go away or stay the same. Ice it. Take it easy. After a week, the swelling should go away and pain level should decrease, you can probably resume your usual activities. See how your knee feels. If pain persists, see your doctor again. Note when pain occurs, going up steps, going down steps, running, standing, kneeling, turning, jumping, kicking, bending, certain angles, leg fully extended, etc. and tell that to the doctor.
  21. Changing ROH is easy. You can always ask the sharpener for a deeper ROH. You could ask for 7/16 or 3/8" and see how that works for a week. Changing profile is a big alteration, more time to do it and costs more money. Changing profile may or may not be good as it pertains to his skating style. If he's going deep into turns, and making hard stops and doing aggressive direction changes, going with a longer profile may not be beneficial as it pertains to agility. Other questions which may help others provide you better suggestions, how tall is he and what is his weight, what's his skate size?
  22. Interesting question. I've never heard of anyone getting "traded" mid-season. But, if someone is above or below their skill level, they might change division/level in the following season, and the player would need to find a new team in that new level/division.
  23. I have the polished Speedblade 4.0 blades, mirror-like polish. I got them sharpened at the rink LHS that uses the Sparx machine. The person used a leather thing to debur them, which was nice, but I found that didn't debur all burrs. I could feel them. Anyway, I took a stone to them. That scratched the mirror polish, but I didn't see any difference in performance. If I polish them back to a mirror-like shine with my dremel tool, I think it will only help appearance-wise.
  24. I don't see how an external coating on a blade can make you faster or slower without it. Most of the time, it's the area inside the hollow that is making contact with the ice. This is, I believe, why FBV and shallower ROH is beneficial for better glide.
  25. Well, unless you've dealt with them in the past, they why are you speculating what they will do?
